Summer vacation was the best time ever, and my friends and I found plenty to keep us busy

I loved playing with sparklers.

Those were the days, back in that river basin climate of Southern Indiana, when one of the neighborhood moms dragged out her sprinkler.

our little town of 20,000 had two dime stores, where my babysitting money and 50-cent weekly allowance went farther.

for me the icing on the summertime cake was sleep-away camp

After supper, the place for the young crowd was Uncle John’s Kiddieland.

I saved my favorite for last:  Jump Rope.
