The summer I was nine, my dad brought home a croquet set for me.

The dessert of choice was usually a homemade pie, which brings us to the topic. I LOVED her pies.

Nowadays, many of the family are not in my hometown on Memorial Day, so whenever we visit, we all get together to decorate the graves of all family members who’ve passed away . . . not only those who served.

Remember in our day, we rented our caps and gowns? No more. Now the kids BUY both and can do with them what they want . . . within reason of course.

One woman told me her brother used to catch small lizards and “help them” open their little mouths so that they’d clamp down on his ear lobes.

If you had asked, I’d have told you I have no memories of celebrating May Day during my childhood.

I have fond memories of the role flowers have played in my life.
